Youthline open 24/7 over Christmas

Youthline’s helpline will continue operating 24/7 throughout the Christmas holiday period, ensuring young people and families all around New Zealand get the support they need.

Youthline Auckland CEO, Stephen Bell says although this is generally considered a happy time of year, it can also be very difficult for a lot of young people.

“As well as the usual issues facing youth, the summer break can bring all the anxieties associated with the start of a new educational year, including, for many, leaving home for the first time, with the transition to university or training institutes. Others will be starting work, while just as many will begin a long, hard, dispiriting search for employment.  In any of these situations, it’s easy to be overcome with worry,” he says.

Alongside these concerns, the pressure and financial stress that many families experience at this time of year, combined with increased social activity where drug and alcohol intake becomes higher can negatively affect family relationships and the wellbeing of young people.

“The great thing about Youthline is that people can contact us anytime they want.  From crisis situations, to those just wanting someone to listen - we offer the chance to talk things through in a confidential, non-threatening way,” says Mr Bell.

The fact that they are also raising money for us is just icing on the cake – the real kicker is that they’ve picked up a whole new set of skills and provided an opportunity for their community to get involved as well. Lois Gregory and Monica Judge, both Year 8 students at Murrays Bay Intermediate, have planned and executed the entire event themselves, with support from family, friends and teachers.


Keeping young people safe online

Parents, schools, churches – everyone who is part of a young person’s life needs to help make them aware about what they may come across in cyber space and make it a topic they are willing to openly talk about. Youthline National spokesperson Stephen Bell says it’s vital that young people protect themselves against all forms of cyber bullying and abuse, and believes education is the key to making this happen.


Supporting our Youth

Long established youth organisation, Youthline is working alongside the Counties Manukau District Health Board and other service providers to address concerns over an increasing number of youth suicides in the Counties Manukau region. Over the coming months, Youthline will be working to ensure relevant resources and information is available, particularly to the Pacific community, where the suicides have been most prevalent.
