The tiny Rockit™ apples will come in three cylinder sizes as a further innovation for the award winning product.
Rockit™ grower and marketer Phil Alison says the apples, which sold out in 2010, will be exclusively in New World Supermarkets in New Zealand, Marks & Spencer in the UK and in specialty stores in Taiwan.
Following the launch last year the apples went on to national and international success including winning the Small/Emerging Enterprise Award and the KPMG Food Enterprise Innovation Award at the NZ Food Awards and was then one of three finalists in the NZ Food Award.
The small apples (golf ball size) sweet, crunchy and “distinctively fresh” then went on to being a finalist of the innovation awards at the Logistica Expo in Germany.
“The first year was incredibly successful with consumer demand and awards.
“We’ve continued to listen to our customers and have added new cylinders with four, five and six Rockit™ apples,” Mr Alison said.
The variety has been bred in New Zealand by Plant & Food and Mr Alison’s Havelock North Fruit Co Ltd has the global rights, which were secured from Prevar, the NZ commercialisation company.
The apples are marketed as “your daily fruit blast” and features a block of red intense blush colour.
The product’s unique packaging, smaller size of the apple natural flavour, opens up the variety to the convenience food market aimed at both younger consumers as well as those looking for a healthier alternative snack.
“Part of the Rockit™ uniqueness is its size, this is a snack sensation, and we believe it will appeal to the younger age group, and the traditional non-apple eater,” he said.
He is also hoping consumers will see the value of opting for a snack-size apple rather than going for a big apple or traditional snacks like chocolate or chips.
Mr Alison said Rockit™ apples will be available in New World Supermarkets in Hastings, Napier, Havelock North, Wellington and Auckland.
