Skye's distillery produces a unique style of whisky, half way between a gentle, salty, smoky West Highland malt and a big iodiney monster from Islay.
Robust and punchy, peat plays a leading role on the nose, backed up with leather and spice.
The distillery is located on the western coast of the island. Very peaty water came from a burn on Cnoc nan Speireag (Hawk Hill), this was mixed with ground, malted barley then fermented. Double distillation in pot stills produced the spirit which was then aged for 10 years in old Bourbon and Sherry casks. The whisky is only diluted to 45.8% abv as this is considered to be a very warming strength.
