Marae-based Classes at Whakarongotai

Korero with Mereana Selby about the Wananga providing Te Reo and tikanga based classes. Mereana would like us to all consider what sort of learning we would like to pursue, as they would like to be able to tautoko and support our education. Kahu suggested we consider different aspects of knowledge, such as Rongoa, Taranaki Moteatea, Te Reo, Rorohiko (computers), Rangatahi/teenager or Kaumatua classes.

Urbanisation has been a subject of debate for many years and today we see a good working relationship between Iwi, NZ Historic Places Trust, land owners, the council, developers and contractors. Where ko iwi, taonga or midden (traditional waste sites) are recovered, progress is diverted or sometimes halted while identification by tribal leaders, archaeologists and officials ensues.

Other areas of care include assisting schools in catering for the needs of those maori youth deemed as ‘at risk’ and in need of specialist care and services. Providing Social services to maori and the community through whanau support in the areas of child abuse prevention and holiday programmes. CHRISTINE PERA HENDERSON: is our Whanau Support Worker, she is a descendant of Tuhoe and Ngati Awa but has resided mostly in Porirua.
