To use lumber in structural applications, construction professionals need information on the strength capabilities of various lumber grades. WWPA's Technical Services Division leads the industry in creating and distributing this technical information to professional users worldwide.

Architects, engineers, builders, code officials and others rely on WWPA data to select the right grade, strength value and fasteners for building with wood.

The Association's technical activities are carried out by lumber technical experts stationed at the WWPA headquarters in Portland, Ore. These experts are available to educate key audiences on how to properly specify and use Western lumber.

Association Technical Services activities include:

  • Wood engineering data. Western lumber design values, design criteria, loading data and span tables have been developed through WWPA's wood engineering research. This important information is published in a number of technical publications which have become standard reference tools for those who design and build with wood.

  • Code and regulatory issues. WWPA regularly monitors developments in the building code, design and engineering fields can affect the future use of Western lumber in construction. This assures Association-published lumber technical information continues to meet design needs.

This price data is the basis for the monthly and Price Indexes, which are used by the U.S. Forest Service and others to adjust the stumpage price paid on timber harvests. Thereport shows lumber production, orders, shipments and inventories for the week, with year-to-date totals and comparisons to the previous year.

Grade Stamps

The Association is approved to provide mill supervisory services under its rules and the rules of the West Coast Lumber Inspection Bureau, the Redwood Inspection Service, the National Lumber Grades Authority for Canadian Lumber and the NGR portion of the Southern Pine Inspection Bureau Rules.

Quality Assurance

The Association pioneered the quality control procedures used by the lumber industry to make MSR products, and WWPA provides quality control for more finger-jointed lumber operations than any other lumber grading agency in North America. Lumber grading rules are a set of criteria used to determine how various characteristics, such as wane or knots, affect the structural performance of dimension lumber or the aesthetic value of appearance grades.
