WWPA maintains the most comprehensive statistical information available on the Western lumber industry. Statistical information on Western lumber markets and industry performance are compiled by the Association's Economic Services Department.

Much of this information is provided by Western mills, as well as government reports and other statistical sources. Association business information activities include:

  • Western lumber industry performance. WWPA produces which summarize industry activity in the region. Thereport shows lumber production, orders, shipments and inventories for the week, with year-to-date totals and comparisons to the previous year. The monthly provides an overview of lumber industry indicators, from housing starts to U.S. Forest Service timber sales. The annual gives a detailed look at Western lumber production for the year, from species to grade and sizes.
  • Past prices for Western products. Using invoices provided by mills, the Association compiles past price information on Western lumber products. This price data is the basis for the monthly and Price Indexes, which are used by the U.S. Forest Service and others to adjust the stumpage price paid on timber harvests. The Association also publishes the and F.O.B. Price Summary report each month, which is a key item analysis by species showing the volume produced and the average price for each grade.

Technical Services

WWPA's Technical Services Division leads the industry in creating and distributing this technical information to professional users worldwide. To use lumber in structural applications, construction professionals need information on the strength capabilities of various lumber grades. Western lumber design values, design criteria, loading data and span tables have been developed through WWPA's wood engineering research.

Quality Assurance

The Association pioneered the quality control procedures used by the lumber industry to make MSR products, and WWPA provides quality control for more finger-jointed lumber operations than any other lumber grading agency in North America. Lumber grading rules are a set of criteria used to determine how various characteristics, such as wane or knots, affect the structural performance of dimension lumber or the aesthetic value of appearance grades.
