Kawatiri : Westport Harbour

The beginning of March 2012 sees the slipping of the dredger 'Kawatiri' in Nelson, to carry out necessary out of water maintenance.

Included in this work will be the fitting of equipment to upgrade the dredging capabilities of the vessel.

It has been suggested that the work will improve the efficiency of the dredging by approximately 20%.

This investment, planning, preparation, and actual work show the continuous efforts of Westport Harbour Ltd to provide a superior service for our customers.

Coal Facilities Under Development : Westport Harbour

Westport Harbour and Bathurst Resources are currently developing plans for new facilities to handle large volumes of coal coming from their Buller Coal mines. Facilities, including rail loadout, conveying, covered storage and ship loaders are currently being designed. Coal is loaded to coastal vessels and shipped to New Plymouth for export.


Early start to tuna season (Westport News) : Westport Harbour

There were about 54 boats fishing out of Westport currently and the season was off to an unusually early start, said Talley’s Fisheries’ administrator Lee Robertson. The first catch had come in on December 23 and staff had worked through the Christmas period, minus the statutory holidays, unloading, said Ms Robertson. Ms Robertson said it could also be that the tuna had always been here in December but no one had realised before.
