Mobile website design options
Mobile access to the web is growing fast. Users access the web on a range of devices - desktop, laptop, tablet and mobile - with varying screen sizes and capabilities.
Users on the move may not have the same interests and needs as users at their desktops.
Hence the mobile design challenge: should I create separate site/s for mobile users, or make my website work on all these devices?
The solutions: device-specific vs 'one web' design
Building a separate mobile site optimises the design for mobile devices, and allows you to tailor your content for users on the move.
Alternatively, you can have one site that will work on ‘all’ devices. There are several techniques to achieve this:
- try to cater to any possible screen size with fluid layout (‘responsive design’), or
- build for a sensible preset range of screen sizes (‘adaptive design’).

Building a website to work on all devices
It's already possible to view a website on a browser of any size. However, viewing a site designed for a desktop computer on say, a smartphone, may provide a poor user experience, with excessive zooming and scrolling.
