Interior Design, Renovation, Interior Designer
Bluepencil specialises in residential projects ranging in scale from a new bathroom or pergola, to major renovations, new dwellings and multi unit housing developments.
In all of the projects we undertake, Bluepencil strives to come up with innovative, realistic and cost effective design solutions, which maximise the “wow” factor.
To obtain the best possible design outcome, we look to involve the client as much as possible in the design process. Generally clients have ideas of what they would like to achieve and the key is to listen and strike a balance between their thoughts and desires, and the new ideas which we will introduce.
Matarawa New House
Bluepencil partnered with interior designer Jen Archer, together who developed the concept and produced working drawings to obtain building consent.
The final result ended in an elegant, individually styled dwelling for the client. The new dwelling is located on an olive grove and enjoys wonderful views over the neighbouring river. The house is orientated towards the views and the sun. All efforts were made to create an environmentally friendly house, through the use of green building materials and practices. Overall a very successful and unique property.
Paramata New House
This new house has just been completed and has amazing views over the harbour and hills beyond. It gets amazing sun all day and has been designed to take advantage of this and the outlook.
The site was very restricted in terms of a buildable footprint, height controls and covenants, and this in turn had an influence on the dwelling which by necessity had to be long and thin.
We worked closely with the clients to maximise potiential floor space over three levels and achieved a spacious home with the following amenities - 4 bedroom, ensuite, 2x living, dining, kitchen, large bathroom, laundry and garage.
In addition the majority of rooms have west facing private balconies.
A modest 3 bedroom house, positioned at the top of a sloping site, was extended to provide a modern and desirable property. A retained driveway was added down the site to access a new double garage and laundry under.
On the first floor is a new kitchen and family room with a large deck to maximise indoor/outdoor flow and to enjoy the maximum western sun. The interior design is simple clean and elegant .
An existing dwelling in Brooklyn was altered and extended to provide a more usable family home. The existing roof space was amended to allow occupation of a new master bedroom, walk in wardrobe and ensuite.
On the middle floor a new kitchen, living space and extensive decking, with glass balustrades, were created. The partial ground floor was significantly extended to allow for several new bedrooms and a casual living area.
Overall the dwelling has been modified to provide a contemporary character house with more than enough room to enjoy
Newtown relocated dwelling
A large site in Newtown allowed for an easy subdivision to the road edge, without affecting the integrity of the existing dwelling behind. The client secured a two storey house, from Brittens House Removal yard, in a very poor state of repair. The purchase of this dwelling included the difficult transportation to the site from their Judgeford site.
Bluepencil was engaged to extend and restore the property to a high standard. A high percentage of the existing cladding needed to be replaced and internally, there was very little that could be salvaged, other than the stair balustrade.
The result is a fresh character house, which sits very well on it’s site and with the existing neighbourhood.
Foster New House
A existing empty section in Wainuiomata was just under the minimum lot size required by council. The resulting resource consent required notification and a full council hearing. A positive result meant the client could construct the compact house Bluepencil had designed.
It is a 127 square metre 3 bedroom house with a single garage, bathroom, ensuite and living areas with a high stud. The house is orientated towards the north and provides an easy care and easily maintained distinct home for the clients.
An existing house, floating between it’s character roots and its major 1980’s additions, was transformed with a major renovation to provide it with a new modern identity. As typical of most older dwellings, the service rooms occupied the prime sunlight position. A new kitchen was added along with a family room and large connecting deck.
The balance of the remaining rooms have been reorganised to gain an additional bedroom and ensuite.
The result is a large modern, and easy home to live in.
Ohakune New Chalet
An existing site in Ohakune has been subdivided and a new ski chalet designed to fit in the tight building envelope.
A rustic look with a contemporary twist was designed with the use of exposed timbers and schist used on the exterior and interior of the chalet. With 2 bedrooms, a loft, 2 bathrooms and drying facilities, the chalet can accommodate a family or small group.
The chalet was completed in late 2008.
Wadestown Additions and Alterations
The commercial market has been a growth aspect of Bluepencil over the last few years. Recently we have completed designs for numerous medium scale commerical fit outs for general office, retail and hospitality usage.
As such, we are conversant with all relevant Building Code requirements and have significant experience working with specialist consultants such as quantity surveyors, services engineers and fire designers.
A box historic office fit out
Previously a home to fleas, taggers and stray cats, this historic railway signal building has been returned to its former glory. The clients wanted to relocate their existing successful business to a bigger premises, and they could see the potential and recognised the underlying character of the existing building.
The two separate buildings were connected with a new link way addition, housing a meeting room and staff cafe. A mezzanine floor was added to the main building to maximise office space. Overall the intention was to maintain the industrial design aesthetic and to be sympathetic to the original building. A vibrant funky office now occupies the space and helps to preserve the future of this unique listed building.
Magnetix fit out
An existing magazine retail shop wanted to open a new branch in central Wellington. The brief was to utilise the long narrow retail space footprint, with display stands designed specifically to maximise visual impact yet maintain magazine volumes.
The final result was an elegant modern shop fit out complete with a café towards the front of the shop. The cafe was designed to allow for anticipated coffee volumes and staff manoeuvring behind slim line bar area.
Paris Euro bar fit out
A fit out for a contemporary bar was completed in a historically significant building to capture a young urban market.
Successful for a number of years, the fickle nature of the industry eventuated in another current successful usage for the space, whilst maintaining a majority of the original fit out.
The client approached Bluepencil to design a new modern stair between 2 floors occupied by tenant, Genesis Energy.
A void was cut into existing concrete floor and new “L” shaped stair with timber treads and stainless steel hand railing was designed to provide a clean modern aesthetic

Architectural practices can approach bluepencil at any specified stage of a project, should they require CAD services. We have the capability to pickup a project based on minimal information and certain clients approach us with very particular instructions. Our drawings can be presented to suit clients individual drawing standards, set outs and styles.
Bluepencil utilises Autocad drawing software to ensure a solid compatibility with varying drawing platforms employed by architecture firms.
We can easily create three dimensional walk throughs and exterior renderings of proposed new dwellings or alterations, and often use a 3D platform to design complicated construction details.
Whatever project Bluepencil takes on, we pride ourselves on our ability to adapt quickly to client demands, and ensure that the end product is to the highest level of quality and that we meet deadlines that are demanded upon us.

In many situations the completion of an architectural project is deemed to occur when the building is ready to be occupied. Often the site [garden] and interior furnishings are overlooked due to time or budget constraints.
If possible, however, a unified flow through of the design intent, produces a more cohesive end result.
Bluepencil has an interior designer who has previously worked in London doing high end apartment fit outs and historic building refurbishments. Since returning to New Zealand she has helped many families to revitalise their living arrangements, be that through a new kitchen or bathroom design, a one room renovation or an entire house refurbishment.
Similarly, a well thought through and sympathetic exterior design always enhances the appearance, value and enjoyment of any new or existing building. This typically involves a detailed planting schedule, for which we always recommend the services of a qualified landscape designer.
There are, however, many hard landscaping elements, such as pergola, fences, paving and decks, which we can design to enhance and complement the design of any existing or new building.
An existing kitchen in poor condition was renovated to create an eat in kitchen with a modern and simple style. There is an abundance of storage space, including a large walk in pantry.
Overhead cupboards have been kept to a minimum to provide a more open uncluttered feel.
Historic House Refurbishment Thorndon
A previously untouched house with new occupants and a passion for art, the background needed to be perfect.
Island Bay Kitchen
An existing kitchen and laundry were renovated to provide an appealing and functional space in a sunny hilltop dwelling. High quality fittings were used including linen finish stainless steel, quality appliances and rimu veneer cabinetry.
The kitchen was designed to suit the clients specific storage and cooking needs and preferences, and the result is a functional appealing space.
A family home needed a ‘adult’ but adaptable lounge to allow comfort, cosiness and contemporary life.
Historic House Refurbishment Thorndon
With a growing family and modern lifestyles, this renovated traditional home incorporates both aspects, with fresh painted floorboards, identifying colours throughout and splashes of colour when needed.
A inner city loft needed softening with gentle contrasting yet toned hues, these colours also staged art work and reflected the need for relaxation from the rush of working life.
A loved family house in a fantastic setting needed revamping to grow with the family; children’s rooms that will last through growing years, master bedroom to be used as a retreat and to reflect the tranquillity of the outer surroundings.
In many cases having a three dimensional impression of a building greatly increases the general understanding of how the final product will be realised. Some people have trouble comprehending two dimensional plans and as such a rendered perspective, or walk through can be very beneficial. Bluepencil uses Sketchup Pro and Photoshop to produce compelling and accurate images and walk throughs to scale.
An example of how rendering could be utilised is to easily preview how a reorganisation of an existing office layout may work.
