What do we next in the face of considerable uncertainties? How can we chart a path for the next five years or beyond? In what way should we position our organisation for success? What is our best response as a leadership team? What will it take to get us beyond our functional roles and actually work together as a team?
Groups do not get to become effective teams–able to respond to fresh challenges and gnarly perennials–by happenstance, or even by managing the routine together week in, week out. Senior teams need support to learn how to be at their very best together, especially when they are pushing the boundaries, tackling hard issues, or looking out to the longer term. This support can take a number of forms, and we match our facilitation to the needs of the client in each setting.
Sometimes we plan a meeting from beginning to end, working closely with our client to figure out exactly what the goals are and shaping the space throughout the day to achieve those goals in the end. Sometimes we will work with them through a number of phases to understand issues more deeply and structure options and solutions from the thinking emerging from the team.
Other times we play more of a support role for a meeting that is already planned–but one where everyone wants to focus on the task at hand rather than having a team member distracted by worrying about the process. At times clients may want us to get actively involved in pushing and pulling around the thinking of the members of the group, teaching helpful concepts or new thinking tools to help stretch toward a new synthesis or open up new solutions. We can apply each of these processes over time, and support the team to grow their capabilities to work and think together on hard stuff.
