It is Elite Dairy Genetic Enterprises Ltd's (EDGE) desire to help interested farmers to increase their rate of genetic gain within their own dairy herd.

Some ways to achieve this are:

  • To cut down on herd wastage which allows greater choice of cows to retain in herd
  • Mate yearlings to AB
  • Mate herd to AB for a longer period
  • Rear more AB calves to increase the choice for herd replacements
  • Buy in top genetics as cows, heifers, yearlings, calves and embryos

If a cow lives to the age of 10 (average NZ cow life span = 5 lactations):

  • Under normal reproductive management she may produce 3 AB heifer calves
  • Her heifer calves may arrive any time during those 10 years
  • Her greatest genetic value is in her first 2 - 4 years
