New Zealand’s white wines show strength, while reds are promising but inconsistent. By Daniel Sogg/ Photographs by Kevin Judd.

“… The Vinoptima Gewürztraminer Gisborne Ormond Reserve 2003
(91 [POINTS], $50), from the region north of Hawkes Bay on the east coast of the North Island, resembles bottlings from Alsace, with beautiful litchi and spice notes."

"The 2003 Vinoptima, the wine’s debut release is the first vintage of an ambitious project by Nick Nobilo, who is aiming high with a 20-acre vineyard and newly constructed winery devoted exclusively to Gewürztraminer. Nobilo, formally the owner of Nobilo Wine, now part of Constellation Brands, first experienced with the variety in Gisborne Ormond Valley in the 1970s. “The whole objective is to create a world class [Gewürztraminer] vineyard that over time I want to see produce one of the great new wines of the New World,” he says.”

2009 Vintage Review | Vinoptima

Because of the excellent season and fruit quality we have left 25% of the vineyard area un-harvested to produce a Noble Late Harvest style. The season started with excellent flowering resulting in good even fruit set and about a week earlier than last year. The 2009 harvest at Vinoptima has been outstanding, one of the best for this vineyard and very similar to 2004.
