Tiaho Trust has been working closely with the Whangarei District Council and Enterprise Northland to help make RWC 2011 in Northland an event that everybody can access and enjoy.

To enable easy access to the two games in Whangarei for people with a disability, two Tiaho Trust accessible vans with wheelchair hoists will provide a shuttle service from the designated drop-off area on the new Porownini Avenue extension delivering them directly to the game.  Many thanks to RWC volunteers Michael MacDonald and Scott McDonald who are helping to provide this service.

Tiaho Trust, Epilepsy Northland, NorthAble Disability Services and Parent to Parent recently attended the ‘Hook up to Health Hui’ in Ruakaka.  An event focused on hooking families/whanau up to health services in their community which are often provided at no cost.

The sun was out and the fish may have been biting out at the point, but at the Bream Bay Community Trust, people were ‘hooking into’ a free helping of healthy sausages cooked by the Marsden Lions and Centrah One Home maintenance services.  Homemade chicken soup was also provided by the Bream Bay Community Trust and Regent Training Centre Food cooking class, you couldn’t get enough of this!

The ‘Whangarei Brain Day’ was held in March this year in collaboration with the Neurological Foundation of New Zealand.  It was part of an international effort to communicate the wonder and achievements of brain research and included lectures by leading neuroscientists and clinical neurology experts.

Community organisations that support people with a brain related disorder were also present and talked about the many valuable services they provide in the community and how people can access their services.

If you missed this great event you can now buy a three disc DVD set which includes all the lectures and presentations from Channel North Television by phoning them on 09 438 1658

“This project is a great example of Northland Tourism Innovation, we are probably the first major Hotel in New Zealand to have a mobility scooter available for hire.”

Guests at the Copthorne will have access to greater mobility around Waitangi and Paihia, thanks to a new partnership between Dove’s Tail and the Copthorne Hotel and Resort Bay of Islands, with financial support from Top Energy.

There is a new mobility scooter available for hire at the Waitangi Copthorne, which will provide a far greater holiday experience for tourists visiting the Bay of Islands with a mobility impairment.
