2011 Parliamentary Seminars

August Seminar

The Speaker, Dr the Rt Hon Lockwood Smith addresses the seminar participants at the start of the day, watched by Trust chair, Sir John Goulter.

The Clerk of the House, Mary Harris, begins the joint session of "The Business of the House" with the Senior

Government Whip, Chris Tremain, and the Senior Labour Party Whip, Hon Rick Barker.

Hon Peter Dunne, Leader of the United Future Party, talks to seminar participants on making a submission to a Select Committee.

Rahui Katene, a representative of the Maori Party, speaks on the session "MMP at Work".

Hon Hekia Parata, Minister of Ethnic Affairs, Women's Affairs, and Associate Minister for ACC, the Community and Voluntary Sector and of Energy and Resources, speaks on her role as a Cabinet Minister.

Louise Upston, National MP for Taupo, shares the session on "The Member of Parliament" with Kelvin Davis, Labour List MP (pictured below).

The last speaker of the day, Jane Patterson, Parliamentary Chief Reporter for Radio New Zealand and Chair of the Press Gallery, speaking on "Reporting Parliament".

The objective of the Business Study Programme is to give an overview of key business functions and to encourage MPs' understanding of the contribution business makes to the economy. Under this scheme, Parliamentary Seminars are organised by the Trust for representatives of the Trust?s corporate membership and hosted by the Speaker as President of the Trust.

As an extension of the Business Study Programme scheme, the Trust organises an annual Business Briefing for MPs where a prominent guest speaker is invited to talk to MPs and corporate guests, on a subject that may be topical or bear specific interest to those in the corporate world.
