Sludge Handling and Drying
The GMF-Gouda Paddle dryer can be used for dewatering sludge (of various types) in waste water treatment plants. Many wastewater treatment plants are coping with a waste stream of digested sludge. The sludge is normally dewatered by means of a centrifuge or belt filter press. After dewatering the sludge has a typical dry solids content of approx. 20 - 25%, which is very suitable for thermal treatment in a GMF-Gouda paddle dryer.
The heart of the installation consists of a trough containing two counter rotating shafts, arrayed with paddles. Thermal oil or saturated steam of 180 - 250 oC flows continuously through the jacket, hollow shafts and paddles. As the sludge feeds in, the wedge-shaped paddles ensure perfect local mixing and mechanical fluidisation. The shafts are precisely aligned, and thus enable the paddles to interweave as they turn. This ensures the ideal surface to product contact and sludge flow, leading to high evaporation rates per square meter inside the machine.
Shaftless Screw Conveyors

A system of SPIRAC horizontal, inclined and vertical shaftless conveyors with no intermediate or end bearings, low rpm’s and low power usage is a space-saving, extremely reliable conveying option.
Maintenance is significantly reduced when compared to traditional conveying methods. The elimination of a central shaft allows a much higher fill rate resulting in lower rpm’s; more efficient conveying and consequently less wear and power usage.
The shaftless spiral allows higher filling rates and lower rpm’s resulting in less wear and consequently less maintenance and down time. Although the spirals can be made of many different materials, the primary material is HTMAS (High Tensile Mircoalloyed Steel) - a special steel from Sweden with mechanical properties that result in the SPIRAC spiral having a very high tensile strength.
No intermediate or end bearings
Eliminating intermediate and end bearings reduces major maintenance work. It also allows efficient and direct transfer into another conveyor – horizontal, inclined or vertical.
SPIRAC’s proprietary liner, DURAFLO SPX, has been designed specifically to ensure low wear and long life. A combination of material thickness and formulation gives Duraflo SPX its unique wearing characteristics. DURAFLO SPX has been developed over many years and is one of the key features which ensures that SPIRAC conveyors are industry leading. The DURAFLO SPX liner also has a built-in wear indicator with a snap-in, snap-out feature enabling easy replacement.
Totally enclosed troughs
SPIRAC conveyors are totally enclosed. There is no spillage of the material being conveyed and odours are completely contained.
SPIRAC’s direct-drive design allows a clean and efficient transmission without the maintenance required with belt and chain drives.
