Homeless Cantabrians could soon be living in holiday homes and farm cottages under a Government scheme to aid earthquake victims.
Yesterday, Housing Minister Phil Heatley announced the Housing Emergency Lease Programme (Help) to provide rental homes for those forced out of their properties by the September 4 earthquake and aftershocks.
The scheme will be run by Housing New Zealand (HNZ), with people owning holiday homes, farm cottages and for-sale homes asked to rent out their properties.
Crown-owned properties, including houses near the Burnham Military Camp and those used by the Education Ministry, will be included in the rental pool.
