Binding options

Perfect Binding

Perfect binding is the type of binding you see on a paperback. The most commonly used and professional-looking option when self-publishing. The cover wraps around the spine from front to back and is held in place with strong glue.

You will see that we can do up to REALLY big spine widths, as illustrated.

Saddle-stitched Binding

The cover wraps around the book and has two staples in the spine. This option is suitable for workbooks, readers and small booklets. It's cheaper than a perfect bind finish, though thickness is limited. Square folding, to achieve a perfect bound 'square spine' look, is also available.

Saddle stitching is often used for children's picture book printing. Great prices!

Other binding options include:

Spiral Binding – plastic

Holes are punched down the side of the inside pages and a plastic spiral is inserted to hold the pages. The advantages are that this finish allows the book to lie completely flat, to be folded back and the spiral can be opened and pages added or removed.

Spiral Binding – wire

This is the same process as for plastic spiral binding but the spirals are wire, giving a smart look.

Fastback Binding

A black cloth strip that wraps around the spine of the book — the strip does come in other colours and usually has spine stapled for strength.

Hardcover Binding

A hard cover publication is rarely an option for short print runs and becomes more affordable only for print runs over 1000 copies. Your PublishMe client manager can source a commercial printer to do that at a competitive price.

Also available, any number of ring binders and folders:

If you want tabs in your manuals – we can do that too.

And if you want stapled sheet booklets, or colour paper inserts, that's not a problem.

Posters available up to A3 oversize.

Paper Information

What does 'gsm' mean?

The thickness of a sheet of paper is indicated by the weight of the paper, measured in grams per square metre (gsm).

80gsm paper – this is the most common type of paper used in printing of all types – it is your standard photocopier paper.

100gsm – a heavier, though not always thicker, weight of paper. This paper may be selected to reduce the 'show through' from a double-sided page, especially when colour photos are used. It gives a very professional look but it is a little more expensive. Children's picture books would be done on 100 gsm paper.

150, 250 and 300gsm card – the weight you use will depend on the purpose of your publication. For book covers we use 300gsm.

  Janet Murdoch: Railway to Welbourn

"The printing process didn't take very long, the proof copy I was able to view after a few days and the final copies were absolutely wonderful."
