Embedded I/O Expansion Modules

By: Pmb  06-Dec-2011

The LCD adapter board interfaces a standard parallel LCD module to a PC parallel port.

There are a number of software packages available for download that will drive the LCD displaying system parameters and other information. These can also be used with PC based MP3 players.

The interface supports contrast adjustment and LED backlight switching. Power is supplied from a spare hard drive power lead from the PC power supply. Only the 5V supply is used for the LCD and backlight.

The interface is designed to attach to the back of our standard 4 line 20 charater LCD module. It could be connected to just about any parallel LCD module with a bit of wiring between the interface and LCD.

The ribbon cable connects to the PC parallel port which can be external on the back of the PC or an internal header.

Jumpers on the interface board allow adjustments to suit different driver software; see downloads below.

Embedded PIC Module

The 40-way header is intended for local I/O that does not run far from the board; typically switches, LEDs, light sensor, temperature sensor etc. We can also supply it with a dual-row right-angle or straight header pin strip for circuit board mounting. The SIM_1A provides local I/O connections, some preprocessing and then transfers data to the master.

Embedded PIC Module GPC_8A

It provides six inputs and directly drives two LEDs which are controlled by the inputs and flashed at two different rates. Switching one of the normally-open terminals to 0V common will start the appropriate LED flashing. The normally-open connections, if not used will have to be connected to a 0V common terminal. This is a specific LED flasher function using the GPC_8A general purpose controller module.
