There has been a recent resurgence in interest in artificial material grafts, but these have not performed well in the past and their current. There are two options in ACL grafts – 1) patellar tendon, and 2) hamstring tendon graft. Allograft (from donor) is not readily available. Xenografts are no longer used.

The material options in hip replacement bearings are between: Acetabular plastic- which has poor long term wear characteristics, and whose wear particles cause foreign body reactions and consequent implant loosening, and is therefore unsuitable for long- term implantation in young patients; against a metal or ceramic head.
