The Region comprises the large geographical area North of Auckland.
Its climate is largely sub-tropical, and is renowned for its remaining forest stands of kauri trees, including the magnificent Tãne Mahuta (over 50 metres tall and 2000 years old) in the Waipoua forest. No part of Northland is more than 40km from the sea, so that fishing and sailing are major recreational activities.
