Interesting articles and blog posts

This week is all about the last couple of weeks of training and the big event itself. While the second post linked to below talks specifically about the Northburn 100 event it applies equally to other long distance events and even some of the points are useful for shorter distances too.

I think one of the most important things to remember when running any distance is that (unless you're an elite athelete) you are racing for yourself and you should enjoy the big day.

Have a great running week! I'm running the Tarawera Ultra 85K on Saturday, which will be my first ultramarathon event.

Chris Hope's race report for the Tarawera Ultra Marathon 85K 2012

I found the first section from the start to the Okareka aid station the easiest and then got progressively slower on the next two legs to Okataina then Tarawera Falls as the terrain got more up and down hilly and more walking was required. I carried this plan out pretty well but as it turned out didn’t eat enough and couldn’t face any more gels after the first 5, so didn’t end up taking in enough calories to make up for what I was burning.

The Huntly Half Marathon is a well-established event on the running calendar and has a strong fan base, attracting more than 2000 walkers and runners from Auckland, the Waikato and central North Island. All events start and end at Laingholm Primary School on an out and back course which is mainly off road on gravel and 4WD tracks. The winner of the Rotorua Marathon competition was Craig Price from Papamoa who will be running the full marathon.
