Dementia currently affects around 25 million people worldwide and the number is set to rise to more than 80 million over the next 30 years. During the past decade, the advent of pharmacological treatments for Alzheimer's disease (AD), which is the cause of two-thirds of cases of dementia, has been a major catalyst for improved awareness of the disease and has prompted wider recognition of the need for and benefits of early and accurate diagnosis.
