Contouring and DTM’s

Aerial Surveys offers DTM’s and Contour mapping services to provide important information for the management of forest areas.  This information allows planners, planting contractors, road constructors and harvesters to plan activities appropriate for the terrain, highlighting ridge lines, watercourses, slope and aspect, and other topographical features.  DTM and Contour maps are particularly relevant for cable hauler planning, where cable clearance over ground features is critical.


Orthophotos are vertical aerial photographs that have been corrected to provide an accurate scale over any part of the image.  In forestry they are important as an image that can overlay boundary or roading plans, and contour  maps.  Distances to and from features can be taken from an orthophoto for accurate location within a forest.  As they are created in digital format they can be incorporated into a GIS environment to complement other stored spatial information.

Stand Mapping

Stand mapping provides information about the net stocked area of a stand of trees within a forest.  Accurate stand boundaries will reflect the gross area in contention, but the productivity is determined by the proportion of that stand that is growing trees – the net stocked area.

When used in conjunction with Aerial Surveys’ Automatic Tree Counting solution, stocking rates (Stems per hectare or acre) can be determined

Using other Aerial Surveys products such as 3D visualisation  allows features such as road lines and harvest faces to be placed into a 3D model of the area to gauge the impact of an activity.

LiDAR/ALS | Aerial Surveys

This data is referred to as intensity data and when greyscale readings are applied to the measurements, an intensity image is created, effectively delivering a medium resolution black and white ortho image. Depending upon the area of interest, size, shape and type of terrain, the parameters within the LiDAR system (pulse rate, swath width and scan angle) are set to achieve the best solution for each project.
