Still hot from its launch in New Zealand last month, SolidWorks 2012 is being touted by engineering design specialists as, among others, key to significantly improve the performance of Emirates Team NZ’s AC72 catamaran to be raced in the Americas Cup in 2013 in San Francisco; further diversify and develop Fletcher Aluminium’s window and door hardware systems; and help SMC Pneumatics clients visualise parts and assemblies in 3D environment.

Emirates Team NZ

New Zealand’s racing team Emirates Team NZ has been using SolidWorks to help design its racing yachts since its successful defense of the 2000 Americas Cup in Auckland.

Loren Poole, managing director of Bioform Ltd, engineering consultans to Emirates Team NZ, says they use 3D solid modelling with SolidWorks for the main boat assembly, including the detailing of the hulls, platform and now, for the design of the new wing for the AC72 Catamaran to be raced in the Americas Cup in 2013 in San Francisco.

Poole was among design engineers who attended the Intercad launch of SolidWorks in Auckland.

The ability to freeze the rebuild of certain components of large assemblies, be able to choose when to rebuild large drawings, these two features will significantly improve the performance and productivity when working with large complex assemblies like our boat and wing assemblies.

The equation editing interface also looks to be a lot more functional and accessible. We use a lot of equation driven design so will use this new feature extensively," Poole says.

Poole says the 35-odd designers on his team are looking forward to training and putting to use the new functionalities in the 2012

We will be upgrading as soon as possible because we see these upgrades as significant improvements that we can utilize immediately. Time allowing, we would certainly like to take up the offer of training for subscription users that is offered.

"Intercad’s supply of SolidWorks and support to Emirates Team NZ is a key ingredient to a successful challenge for the Cup in San Francisco in 2013."

Commentary

New Zealand is a small economy and as such, we shouldn’t expect that we can do what larger economies do.”How many times have you heard that statement?Personally, I hear it at least once a week, sometimes more often, and it sickens me.It smacks of defeatism and a lack of vision, and sounds like a convenient excuse.
