Hydraulic rotary heads supplied as attachments for excavators are now common. The majority use planetary gears to obtain high torques from relatively small hydraulic motors. Longitudinal drum cutters are fitted with large powerful hydraulic motors ideally suited for driving augers.
Owners asked whether their longitudinal drum cutters could be used as rotary heads so Erkat designed an adaptor that could be attached to the output shaft for this purpose. Although extremely useful for some applications, the standard longutidinal drum cutter plus adaptor was too long and too expensive for use as a dedicated auger drive unit.
Erkat designed a short housing and alternative shaft arrangement that allowed them to offer an auger drive unit at a competitive price. The range of auger drive units covers torques from 3.5 to 23.4 kNm and the can be mounted on excavators from 7 to 40 tons in weight.
