Licensed Surveyors are the only persons permitted to place surveys pegs which determine the boundaries of your property.
These are placed in the ground, usually with the top 75mm visible above the ground, and are traditionally made of wood, although in some circumstances are aluminium. If the boundary position is in concrete then a small aluminium disk may be ramset into concrete. In some circumstances, boundary posts are used instead of a boundary peg.
The survey records establish where these boundary markers have been placed and allow surveyors to re-establish these positions, and replace them if necessary.
If you are building a new fence, which should be placed on the boundary and can not find the boundary markers, then you will need to contact a Surveyor. If you are building close to a boundary, then the Local Council may require these boundaries to be marked out, so they can ensure your building is sufficiently far away from the boundary.
The costs to replace boundary pegs will vary from site to site. The most significant issue is the age of the survey which originally placed the pegs. The older the survey, the higher the costs. In many cases, the original pegs are still there, and these can be uncovered and marked. If the pegs are missing and can be replaced from the original survey marks, then no further work is required.
However if the pegs are missing and need to be replaced by undertaking further survey work, then this information must be recorded and the records lodged with Land Information NZ. This will incur additional costs.
