Is your dog escaping? Looking at getting a Dog Fence - but which one? K9 Control want to help in the selection of the right dog fence for your dog. This type of dog fencing is also known as a hidden fence, an invisible dog fence, dog containment system, an Innotek containment fence, a PetSafe In-Ground radio fence or a SportDog Stubborn Dog Fence. These names relate to the fact that the Boundary Wire can be buried under ground, making it a 'hidden fence' or an an invisible dog fence. However, you don't need to bury the boundary wire, it can simply be attached to your existing fencing if that is easier.

The important thing is to choose the right dog fence with features that are going to best meet your requirements, suit your dog's temperament, as well as meet the requirements of your property. To further assist with this, we will have a look at each of the dog fencing systems we have in stock at present (additional models arriving soon);

Innotek Smart Dog SD2000: This is an entry level/base model dog fence by Innotek. The transmitter that comes with this dog fencing kit can cover up to 5 acres. This containment system and invisble dog fence collar is best suited to dogs that are 8kg or heavier. Please note that this is the only collar in our range of dog fences that is weatherproof, not waterproof. The collar is powered by a 6V alkaline battery. This system can be used with most dogs (not stubborn dogs and 8kg+), and used on residential house blocks to small acreages (additional boundary kits may be required). For more details,

Innotek SD2100: This is, by far, one of the most popular and versatile dog fence systems on the market. The small, waterproof collar is rechargeable, and can be worn by dogs starting from as little as 5kgs in weight. You also have the option of selecting the level that best suits your dog, from Low, Medium or High on the dog containment system transmitter. This dog fence can cover a property up to 25 acres and features battery back-up to keep the system running during power failures. The Innotek Smart Dog SD-2100 Invisible Dog Fence is worth considering for most dogs and can be used on suburban house block right through to medium sized acreages (additional boundary kits may be required).

PetSafe Standard Inground Radio Fence (PRF-3004W): This is the PetSafe entry level dog fencing model. In terms of entry level dog fence models it features a smaller collar which is waterproof. In addition to this, the system can cover a property up to 10 acres in size. This dog fencing system is for dogs starting from 5kg in weight, with a moderate temperament. It can be used on properties up to 10 acres (additional boundary kits may be required).

PetSafe Stubborn Dog In-Ground, Radio Dog Fence (PIG00-0007): This dog fence is for medium to large and stubborn breeds of dog. The collar is waterproof and features a training mode and 4 levels of correction (Med, Med-High, High and Very High). The benefit with this dog fencing is that each individual collar can be set to suit each dog, unlike other systems where the level of correction is set across the system. This dog fence is suited to large dogs starting at around 15kg, particularly the Working dog or Stubborn dog.

SportDog Stubborn Dog Fence (SDF-100): This dog fencing system is for larger dogs, stubborn dogs and for larger properties. The durable, waterproof collar features a training level and 4 correction levels and is on a heavy duty, buckle strap. This dog fence comes with 300m of wire, double the amount of any other dog containment system. In addition to this, the strong transmitter comes with an in-built lightning surge protection and is capable of covering up to 100 acres (additional boundary kits may be required). This is our most popular dog fence for larger and more stubborn dogs.

PetSafe Deluxe Little Dog Inground Fence (PIC22-11868): As with many pet products, it is often hard to find products that are really suited to the smaller dogs. This is where the PetSafe Little Dog Fence comes into its own. It has the smallest collar currently available, it is both waterproof and features 4 correction levels. This PetSafe containment system can be used on properties up to 25 acres in size (additional boundary kits may be required) and is ideal for the small dog from 3.5kg to 7kg, but is equally effective on medium sized dogs that have a responsive temperament.

If you have a number of dogs that are either different sizes, breeds, temperaments, it can appear that you are in a tough situation when selecting a dog fence. However, if you stick with the PetSafe and SportDog radio dog fences, you can overcome this. The PetSafe and SportDog brands of dog fencing run off the same frequency, allowing the collars to be used one either system. An example of this is if you had a large driven working dog, you may consider the SportDog Stubborn Dog Fence. Then, someone in the family brings home a small white fluffy number, you simply order the PetSafe Deluxe Little Dog Fence Collar and both collars will work on the same dog fencing system.

This has hopefully provided with an overview and summarised how the different dog fences are there to meet the demands that come with different dog breeds and circumstances.
