Bearded dragons, Chinchilla squirrels, and baby tortoises are just same of the menagerie making its way back to Auckland after a year away in Taupo. Sally Hibbard of Oracle Animal Care Workshops and Pet Parties left her hometown of Auckland to try life in picturesque Taupo. This was no small feat with several hundred animals in tow. However with a second winter upon her, Sally has chosen to leave the sometimes subzero temperatures of the Central North behind and come home to Auckland’s North Shore.
Taupo’s loss is certainly the North Shore’s gain, with holiday workshops for young animal lovers lined up come July. Sally is an expert on pets and exotic animals and shares her passion and knowledge with children of all ages who can enjoy a hands-on experience with many types of curious creatures.
Some of the members of this mobile zoo could even be described as ‘party animals’ as they are available for birthday parties, along with Sally of course. “The parties are great fun” says Sally who emphasises the importance of keeping her animals safe when they are working. “We are all about encouraging respect and kindness for animals as well as teaching young people what makes each one special”.
The logistics of moving such a quantity of animals is daunting. There will be three trips from Taupo in a fully laden van each time, with frequent stops to feed and water the animals. Sally tells me the most difficult to transport are the aquatic creatures such as fire bellied newts, African lungfish and an assortment of other amphibians and fish. “The slosh factor is quite challenging, so it will be a slow drive to avoid any of them getting seasick” she says.
Animals like rabbits and guinea pigs are easy to transport apparently as they just eat the whole way. Sally’s two Pomeranian Cross dogs are seasoned travellers and I am told that other than adjusting the GPS with their naughty little paws from time to time, they are great travel buddies.
A self-confessed ‘animal nerd’, Sally’s interest in animals started as a child with pet snails and field studies of garden caterpillars before she studied zoology at Auckland University and went on to own pet stores, work with vets and now with her animal workshops and parties. A long-time resident of the North Shore, Sally’s return will be a welcome one for animal lovers of all ages.
