The Clevedon Game Fishing Club was founded by a group of like-minded fishermen already involved with the local Clevedon Pub Fishing Club. After two years of travelling to the Bay of Islands with around ten trailer boats to compete in the then 'Hotel Association of New Zealand' tournament, it was decided to have the Club incorporated and affiliated to the NZBGFC. The earliest recorded minutes were on 27 July 2001, held at the Clevedon Hotel.
The Committee comprised of Barry Chibnall - President/Treasurer, Mike DeGraaf - Secretary, Kevin Moeke - Chairman, Donald Amundsen - Delegate and Dave Mael, Bill Benjamin, Doug Fraser, Mark Wylie, Grahame Boustred and Dale Gutry as Committee. On 12 February 2002 CGFC was accepted as an Incorporated Society and its official standing as a council member began.
