Water samples

Watercare Laboratory Services is IANZ accredited and registered with the Ministry of Health as an approved laboratory for testing potable water to confirm compliance with the New Zealand Drinking Water Standards. Strict internal processes ensure that clients meet the Ministry of Health Guidelines for sampling and analysis of their sources and reticulated water supply. Typical analyses performed include, but are not restricted to, the following:

  • E.coli

  • Cryptosporidium and giardia

  • Enterovirus/adenovirus

  • Helminths

  • Algae and cyanobacteria

  • Anions (e.g. nitrate, nitrite, sulphite, chloride, fluoride)

  • Ammoniacal nitrogen

  • Metals - Semi-quantitative screening through to ultra trace detection limits for up to 70 different elements using ICP-MS technology

- Detection of mercury to ultra low levels

  • Colour

  • Total organic carbon

Wastewater samples

The laboratory performs a range of analyses on wastewater, trade waste, leachates, sludges, and biosolids for waste treatment plants. These analyses are used for operational effectiveness and resource consent purposes. Additionally, the laboratory performs analysis for the trade waste branch of Watercare and a number of major landfills in the greater Auckland region.

Environmental samples

Watercare Laboratory Services has significant experience within the field of environmental sample analysis. Environmental projects span a number of matrices and are often unique in their analysis requirements. These analyses are used for operational and stormwater monitoring, State of the Environment monitoring and resource consent purposes. For ongoing environmental monitoring or one-off projects the range of analyses are extensive and include:

  • Shellfish for marine water quality testing

  • Timber treatment plants for heavy metals and organic compounds

  • Horticultural sites for persistent pesticides

  • Macroinvertebrate and algae to determine the health of our streams and lakes

Air Quality Analysis

The Air Quality Group at Watercare specialises in monitoring of air quality in a number of specialised areas including; ambient, stack, workplace and odour. Our services include resource consent review, site visits, requirements assessment and advice on the most appropriate methods and tools for your site. Gases (SO2, H2S, NOx, CO, O3 – by real time analysers and SO2 and NOx by passive sampling.


Our Services

Each day, the company supplies around 370 million litres of drinking water to around approximately 1.3 million customers across Auckland, a city covering 340 square kilometres. Watercare is also responsible for all aspects relating to the quality of the public water supply and wastewater network throughout Auckland. The company draws water from around 30 sources, treats it and delivers it to homes and businesses via a vast network of pipes.


Laboratory Technology

This view on the use of technology is applied to every process within the laboratory – from initial analysis and delivery of results, through to quality control and air conditioning configurations to eliminate airborne contaminants. We are currently going through the process of upgrading our information management system to Labware which will support our future information requirements and offer customers a number of additional functions.



The laboratory is registered with the Ministry of Health as an approved laboratory for testing potable water to confirm compliance with the New Zealand Drinking Water Standards 2005. This accreditation ensures that our laboratory meets stringent international standards of technical competence, reliability and quality management. Major internal audits are carried out on an annual basis with audits of targeted areas being carried out monthly.
