  • OUR THOUGHTS TURN TO ACTIONPLANNING – LET’S GETBACKINTOTHIS RACE*

“This is the strongest group of people I have ever been a part of, and I don’t just mean the boys on this boat, which goes without saying, I mean everyone, the shore team, our supporters, our sponsors, the whole package, it’s a pleasure,” commented Richard Mason to Dave Swete and myself, while on watch this morning. It has been something we have known all along, but to hear it outright from a man who has done a few laps of the globe and has been a part of many different teams and organizations, that truly meant something. There is a strong sense of pride with this team and that is a characteristic that is invaluable. We have dealt with adversity head on, and have all come together stronger throughout our time together. We are already focusing on the next leg. What can we do what, what is on the jobs list, are we going to be able to increase our fitness in the short time we have, what other improvments can we make to the race boat or programme. Each of the boys has had his wetnotes pad out in the last few days, making lists of thoughts and jobs that can move us upward and onward the next time we go sailing. There really is no time to sulk, or feel sorry for ourselves, now all our thoughts are ‘what’s next’, and ‘how can be do better with what we have.’ We have gone to a two on, two on standby, and two off, watch system, which allows everyone to get adequate rest. We continue to make our way toward New Zealand upwind with about 12 knots of boat speed. We have about two days till we hit land and start our process of getting back into the race.

The plan is yet to come…

TEAM SANYA TO SHIP TO MIAMI

Team Sanya will make their return to competitive action in the Volvo Ocean Race in Miami following the rudder and hull damage that has forced them to head back towards New Zealand on Leg 5, with the team reluctantly announcing on Monday that all options that would get the boat back in the race in Brazil have now been exhausted.

ITS HURTING NOW - Team Sanya

The heavy airs passed us, and at first light we re hoisted our main and started to make our way North West back from where we had just come, only to watch our competitors that at one point only got further behind us, continue on and take the lead that we had held.
