A geophysicist, Dr Ian Calhaem, has researched the historical report of the finding of moa bones and lava caves on the Ellerslie Racecourse and believes he has located a possible entrance to the caves. These are listed on the Regional Council database of recorded archilogical sites filed in 1961, No 1489 with grid reference E2671700 N64777000.

Dr Calhaem studied the geomorphology of the site and selected a location for the possible cave entrance.  Later when the grid reference was converted to latitude and longitude it was found that the location was only 25 metres from where he predicted.
