On 31/12/2011 EN 954-1 finally loses the presumption of conformity. Thus, EN 954-1 is finally replaced by EN ISO 13849-1 or EN IEC 62061. What changes are required to apply the new standards ? If you ask experts, much remains as before yet there is much new to consider.

From EN 954-1 to EN ISO 13849-1
EN 954-1 "Safety of Machinery" is a prescriptive standard that defined the essential functional behavior. However, EN ISO 13849 includes a reliability component associated with the determination of safety levels . There are a number of other essential factors which must be considered to achieve a design compliant with EN ISO 13849 and achieve conformance with the machi nery directive. These include: "diagnostic coverage”, system architecture (structure) and common cause failure amongst others.

Proactively beginning with risk assessmentMachine builders and users, who until now, relied on EN 954-1 will be forced to reevaluate their existing safety systems and policies . Doing so proactively beginning with risk assessment , they will yield benefits relating to risk reduction and more intelligent solutions for machinery safety.

Common cause failure is one of the new aspects which have to be observed. However, the question arises to what extent they will actually implement the requirements of the guidelines and technical standards.

Support through external experts

Many machinery manufacturers are confused because of the new functional safety standards and do not know whether their approach is correct or whether it meets the requirements. Pilz provides tools such as the SIL and Performance Level Calculator PAScal and expertise to implement the new standard with optimum results. Through expert safety design and safety validation deficiencies are identified and your confidence is strengthened in your safety design .

Safe control solution for stage technology

The total solution (PSSuniversal PLC, standard rotary encoder PSENenco and PAS4000 software blocks) is standard-compliant in accordance with SIL CL 3 and PL e. The control system PSSuniversal PLC and the new dual-channel standard rotary encoder PSENenco are used for this purpose. Stage hoist applications can be safely monitored in the automation system PSS 4000. It's essential to monitor stage elements that are constantly in motion.

October's sensor of the month: Coded safety switch PSENcode

As a result, it is impossible to manipulate the switch: The highest level of protection can be achieved in the smallest space for applications up to PL e of EN ISO 3849-1 or SIL 3 of EN/IEC 62061, as well as providing high availability for your plant. Integrated evaluation also enables the PSENcode to be connected in series to other sensors, without compromising the safety classification; it also saves on safe inputs on the evaluation device.
