GENERAL ENGLISH COURSE

ESL Course

General English is an intensive ESL (English as a Second Language) course designed for students who wish to improve their English for communication, job, and travel purposes. Classes are organised according to the student’s level of English, which is determined with our own testing system.

Entry Criteria

Age: 14+ at commencement of course

English: Any

Previous Study: Any previous high school study

Listening and Speaking 8 hours per week
Conversation Class 1 hour per week
Workshop (one-to-one tutoring) Twice weekly
TOTAL 24.5 Hours per week.
After completing the course you will be able to:
hold a conversation in English with your teacher. listen and respond to natural Kiwi speech. read general texts and express a personal viewpoint in both oral and written form. hold a conversation about your own life and country and cultural differences you have noticed in New Zealand. go shopping, banking, order a meal in a restaurant, use public transport, use the public library, visit the Doctor, go to the cinema, and other day-to-day activities.

Flexible General English Programme

Available: Wellington Only

Are you in NZ on a Working Holiday Visa? Do you want a flexible programme that allows you to work and study at the same time? The English for Working Holiday Visa programme is designed to help you to communicate better with Kiwis in the workplace, in social situations, and in your day-to-day life. Studies can be full or part time.

Pay tuition fees in two weekly instalments

Study mornings only, afternoons only, or full time.

Please note that this course is ONLY available to students on Working Holiday Visa. Please note also that according to the conditions of your permit, you may only be allowed to study up to a maximum of 3 months.

Programme Structure and Content

Your programme structure and content will depend on your level and when you are available to study. Programmes are usually a combination of General English and/or English for University

Duration: 3 months
Days: Monday to Friday
Hours: Mornings – 9.00 to 12.00
Afternoons – 1.30 to 3.30 (Monday to Thursday)
Full Time – 23 hours per week.
Next Starting Date: Continuous Enrolment (start any week)
Content: Listening, Speaking, Reading, & Writing.
Academic English
After completing the course you will be able to:
Listen and respond to natural Kiwi speech. Read general texts and express a personal viewpoint in both oral and written form. Go shopping, banking, order a meal in a restaurant, use public transport, use the public library, visit the Doctor, go to the cinema, and other day-to-day activities. Hold a conversation about your own life and country and cultural differences you have noticed in New Zealand. Think critically and express personal opinions.

EVENING GENERAL ENGLISH

General English for Communication, Job and Travel

Available: Wellington Only

Study English in the evenings to improve your communication skills in the workplace, or for travelling around New Zealand. Programmes run for 5 weeks, with 2 lessons per week. Enrollment includes study materials, and 30 minutes of individual tuition, at no extra cost. This programme is particularly suitable for Working Holiday Visa holders, or Work Permit holders who are working during the day.

Age: 18+ at commencement of course

English: A minimum of Pre-Intermediate English is required.

Previous Study: Any previous high school study

Duration: 5 weeks
Days: Mondays and Thursdays every week
Hours: 6.30pm to 8.30 pm

CAMBRIDGE EXAM PREPARATION COURSE

FCE, CAE, and CPE

Available: Wellington and Auckland

Cambridge Preparation courses prepare students for sitting the Cambridge First Certificate in English (FCE), Advanced Certificate (CAE), or Certificate in English Proficiency (CPE). The programmes achieve a balance of language development and exam preparation, both of which are necessary for achieving good results. Students have access to a large range of Exam practice materials, and every week students can sit a practice exam, under exam conditions.

Entry Criteria Age: 18+ at commencement of course

English: FCE: Intermediate
CAE: Upper Intermediate
CPE: Advanced
