The first morning of fighting in the 2011 NZ Judo Champs held at the North Shore Events Centre has seen Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals awarded to Howick & St Heliers Judo Club members.
Jason Hum took the Gold medal and is the New Zealand Champion for the Cadet Men -81kg division. Fellow club member Jonathan Liley was runner-up, with a Silver medal, in the same division.
Both Jason and Jonathan fought in the Cadet Men Open and ended up fighting each other in one of the Bronze medal fights. Honors this time went to Jonathan Liley who added a Bronze medal in the Cadet Men Open division to his earlier Silver.
Jonathan was also going to compete in the Junior Men -81 kg division, however he pulled out before the competition began due to a foot injury he sustained while fighting in the Cadets.
Charlie Mair also represented the Howick & St Heliers Judo Club and competed in the Cadet Men -60 kg division. Charlie was fighting well, unfortunately while in his Bronze medal fight he got injured and was unable to complete the fight.
