Oily hair can be genetic, but also may be related to sex hormones. An increase in oiliness is not uncommon during times of stress when adrenaline pumps hormones into the system.
It also may occur because of the contraceptive pill, thyroid problems or menopause.
Oily hair can signify low zinc levels, also marked by white spots on the nails. “Greasy hair should be washed daily with a gentle shampoo. Avoid harsh, stripping formulas which stimulate oil production. Always condition ends only,” says trichologist Nigel Russell.
