Challenge Trust is an incorporated charitable trust that has provided mental health services for the past 17 years. Challenge Trust began as a single residential service in 1993 and has experienced considerable growth during this period. Challenge Trust currently employs 228 people and provides a large range of residential, mobile and community services across the Northland, Auckland, Waikato and Bay of Plenty regions to upwards of 1500 clients and their families, living in their own homes and communities. Challenge Trust is a mainstream Non Government Organisation and operates over 20 residential homes providing dedicated services to many people. These homes provide services to clients experiencing issues with high and complex mental health issues, dual disability, dual diagnosis, drug and alcohol addictions, intellectual and physical disability.

Challenge Trust also provides a large range of mobile and community services to clients and their families, from Packages of Care, Community Support Work, Community Living Services, Mobile Community Support, Family/Whanau services, Activity and day programmes, Older Adult and Child and Youth services. As an organisation Challenge Trust provide a full continuum of service provision and is capable of delivery at multiple levels.

Challenge Trust is one of the few NGOs providing services to Level 4 clients with high levels of acuity, needing intensive supports and monitoring, and has developed a solid reputation for dealing with high needs clients.

Challenge Trust also upon request mentors other NGO organisations and provides training and support programmes to clients and their families who live within the community. By sector standards, Challenge Trust is a large organisation. It is one of the largest within the greater Auckland region.

Community Centre Service | Challenge Trust – Working Together Towards Recovery

The Centre provides ongoing advocacy, peer support, information, life skills, activity and education programmes to family/whanau, the local community and to people with mental illness who are living within the community. The centre provides a comfortable atmosphere in which all people can access information and learn new skills that assist in their personal recovery and development.

He has maintained a healthy relationship with members of his family and lives near the residential services and is comfortable approaching staff there if support is required. He learned new cooking skills, attended a tramping group, attended a walking group, gained work experience, became independent with medication and successfully lost weight.


Packages of Care Services | Challenge Trust – Working Together Towards Recovery

Staff supported him almost every day on his initial return to the community, finding him a flat prior to leaving hospital and then helping him get some basic items such as a bed, sofa, fridge, and a TV set. Packages of Care provide flexible solutions for people who require support to live in the environment and/or community of their choice, while encouraging them to manage their own lives.


Residential Services | Challenge Trust – Working Together Towards Recovery

These services are provided in ‘homely’ environments and are accessible to clients who are referred from the Regional Rehabilitation Co-ordinators working for the Community Mental Health Teams within various District Health Boards. Challenge Trust’s Level 4 residential rehabilitation services are aimed at clients who require continued support in order to regain independence and develop skills that facilitate independent living.
