Burrett & Associates | Pacific Steel Arc Furnace Upgrade

By: Burrett & Associates  05-Apr-2012

The project involved installation of a replacement furnace transformer (with an additional 8MVA capacity), replacement Electric Arc Furnace shell (with an additional 2 tonne melting capacity), and associated technology in the form of a Chemical Energy System (for the injection of oxygen and carbon into the furnace, and natural gas firing) - all within a three-week period in 2007. However, an untimely fault with the existing transformer meant work had to be completed in stages over a two-year period around the plant's busy production schedule, with the final stage being completed in January 2008.

Innovative thinking by Brian Perry Civil, a key participant to the project, meant the project team could replace the furnace foundations prior to the plant shutting down for a short time over the 2007 Christmas period, allowing the furnace itself to be replaced right on schedule.
