Rail Trail's Nature, Scenic & Heritage Sites of the Central West Coast.

 Half day or overnight tour on parts of the West Coast Rail Trail by bicycle.
It’s not about the bike! But you’ll see and do more taking a ride on the flat and smooth trails, with our comfort bikes. There’s mirror lakes, alpine views, rainforests a penguin colony (seasonal). Boutique accommodation, cafes, bars local artisans to see on the way along with a varied selection of activities.
You’ll be entertained while learning about the history and nature of this beautiful region. Your audio-guide will introduce you to the historical characters of the area and lead you on a tour of discovery among the gold and gemstones the place is famous for. 

Choose one of the amazing audio guide themed tours or do them all. Your audio guide brings your surroundings to life, and provides as much detail as you want all at your own pace. It tells you where you are, provides directions and introduces you to real people who live along the way.
Cycle trail includes:

  • Flat, smooth and easy cycle routes, some following historic bush rail lines and water races that have been made cycle friendly. 
  • Visit rain forests, beaches, mirror lakes with beautiful reflections and get introduced to some of our locals on the way. 
  • Lots of pubs, cafes, craft artisans and activities. Stop off and do some fishing, kayaking, goldpanning or gemstone hunting.
  • Includes audio guide to discover what it was like to be a goldminer newly arrived off your sailing ship to make your fortune and follow him into the gold fields. (He had to walk, you’re on your comfort bike).
  • Or let your audio guide introduce you to local wildlife seen in this region with talks from the Department of Conservation including a wide range of birds, penguins (seasonal) and other nature spots.
  • The trail goes past pubs and cafes, visits farms, a Honey House and the home studios of local crafts people. Do some gold or gemstone hunting, listen to some Maori Legends and see sites haunted by the deeds of rogues and rascals both living and dead!
  • All inclusive tours from 3 hours to 2 days. We provide comfort cycles, audio guide, accommodation (for overnight packages), move your luggage, transfer your car or bring you and your cycle back to town.

Easy…On the over nights we transfer your luggage so it is there when you arrive, and there is a range of accommodation types to choose from
You’ll start in Greymouthand then leave your bikes where you finish your package. This can be at Hokitika or back in Greymouth.

Be hosted by a local goldminer of Kumara, the world’s friendliest people. (approx $10 gold tour)

  • For overnights, stay at home with a local or in a replica miners cottage (see package prices)
  • Surprise yourself doing an easy nature ride with no pain, puffing or sweat!
  • You’ll be amazed with the photos you get at the Mirror Lakes.
  • Take your time to smell the rainforest and feel the hanging ferns and moss.
  • Visit the penguin colony on the Wild Tasman Coastline. Conservation activities available. ($10)
  • Birdlife here is incredible, get up close to NZ’s native species in the trail hides.           
  • Cruise your cycle across a wetland without leaving a mark, see stunning views and some of the worlds earliest plant life. If you’re a botanist you’ll be here for weeks!
  • Get up close to NZ’s early History, ride through the rainforest down a goldminers water race and tunnels, pan for your own gold and be staggered by the amount of work they did.
  • Have tea at a locals house entirely self sufficient in energy with ingenious mini hydro generator (approx $6)
  • Be warned!This place was founded on gold, and still is! Where there’s gold there’s trouble, lots of it and in some places it’s still here. Taking the Murder & Mayhem tour will interrupt your sleep! Only choose this audio-guide tour if you can handle chill & fear!
  • Do a section of your tour by water bike on the lagoon ($15 hire)
  • Salmon, trout and beach surf casting sites on the way (from $10 rod hire at fishing site)
  • Jade and gemstone hunting. Some locals make their living from this activity
  • Try the Wildfoods Cuisine we are famous for at the many pubs and cafes on the way ($?)
  • Visit farms, deer, cows, alpaca and goats—try the cheese, it’s delicious
