Sometimes you do come to a plateau during your pole training. There can be a number of reasons for this; if you’ve had some time off for illness or injury, you’ve been working on a routine perfecting moves you already know well or, (and this is me!) you’ve spent months (and months!) working on one single move at the expense of learning anything else new. These plateau times seem to happen to..
It’s the weekend! Yay! Polefit Fanatics have been scouting around the web for a bit of light-reading for you. Some articles you may not have seen before. So grab your favourite beverage, relax and enjoy.
1 and 2. An article on the ‘insidiousness’ of pole dancing Part 1 here. Followed up by Part 2. Read the intelligent response from a studio owner in the comments section of Part 1.
3. A positive..
X-Pole is a household name in the pole world. Most of us have trained on an X-Pole and most of us would certainly have been to one of the many pole events sponsored worldwide by X-Pole. Polefit Fanatics wanted to explore more about X-Pole and it’s origins and spoke to Lisa Leport-Symonds, Manager of the recently opened New Zealand office about X-Pole’s past and present, and its plans for the..
The rise and rise of male pole performers is a heartening sight to see in the growth of pole. Male performers bring their natural strength combined with male elegance and sometimes an element of humour to their performances which makes the male poler a pleasure to watch. The recent World Pole Championships in Budapest had seven world class polers in the Male Division and there are many more well known names. Male..
I don’t feel like my feet have touched the ground recently as I have flown around the country attending competitions and fantastic workshops. Most recently I was in Christchurch to watch a competition final and attended two workshops with Sydney based ‘spinny queen’, Miss Amber Ray.
Without exception, the top level dancers I have met through pole are bright, talented and exceptionally generous with..
I just had an amazing weekend away. At a pole competition, doing pole workshops, talking with polers and learning. It was so great to come away after such a wonderful weekend and feel warm and heartened by what feels like real progress in the skills of the polers and the progression of the sport in general.
Then you run into something like this article from The Press newspaper and featured on the Stuff website. All..
Rafaela Montanaro was coming to Wellington coinciding with the Wellington Heat of the NZAPP and this seemed like the perfect opportunity to go to Wellington and visit at Polaris Pole Dance. This lovely studio in a quaint early 20th century building in inner city Wellington has the feel of a real dance studio; wooden floorboards, breezy warehouse style open ceilings with timber beams, painted in whitewash over..
One of the things I love about pole is it’s a low-tech sport. Apart from your pole that is. I love it that all I need is my shorts, singlet and maybe a bit of chalk and a sweat towel and I’m out the door, off to the studio. Compare that to my husband when he goes out bike riding; bike, helmet, special shoes, special clothing, shoe covers, light, camel bak and on it goes. Quite a performance. However,..
I would be game enough to say there would not be one of us reading this that has not been touched in some way by breast cancer. I personally know at least a dozen women who have suffered from this terrible disease, including my mother-in-law and a very close friend.
The world is full of people – some of whom are ‘talkers’ and some of whom are ‘doers’. Sean O’Connor is the latter.
Sean is the..

At exactly this time a week ago, I competed in my first pole competition. It’s taken me a week since to decide whether or not it was a good idea!
Don’t get me wrong, I think Competitions are fantastic for our sport. Competitions, Amateur, Professional, showcasing pole wherever, whatever, however. It’s all great. There has been lots of talk amongst the pole community about the number of ..
Just for fun! You may recognise yourself in the following list. If you do – pat yourself on the back – you’re a true blue pole dancer!
You know you’re a pole dancer when….
You’re on the sidelines at your childrens’ game and your eyeing up the rugby posts/netball hoop – “Hmm is that about 50mm”?
You no longer wish you were taller.
The sports shop doesn’t have bike..

I am one of those people who is always up and down with my weight. I lose weight, become complacent because I do so much exercise, reach for the chocolate and before I know it have stacked on a few kilos. I know I’m not alone on this, but you girls who can eat what you like and not suffer an additional ounce, this is not for you! I am currently trying to cut down some kilos, it’s working! I’ll..
Most of the time I head to the studio in short shorts and a singlet. The singlet normally gets folded in half over my bust to give me some skin area. My class mates are the same, usually lycra boy shorts or shorts, with a folded up singlet – gorgeous! Not really. In the gym, I tend to favour Australian brand Running Bare, I love the fit, style and colours – but while they have some lovely tops – like this..
Let’s face it, pole dance as fitness/sport is still in nappies. However slowly but surely the framework adding to the professionalism of what we do is being put in place; official naming of pole ‘moves’, regulation bodies forming, competitions being standardised (although there does seem to be a considerable amount of work to be done here.) and Certification of Instructors. Although many will rail..
