There is no charge for the services of North Haven Hospice.

A large part of the Community Team’s work is spending time with the patient and family either face to face where they live or via the telephone. This nurse then works closely with the GP and other services, such as Oncology, to provide what is needed.

A Palliative Medical Specialist works with this team to review patients, and can see them as an outpatient at North Haven or at their home.

In Patient Care

Many of the things you will enjoy about the environment have been generously given by people in the community, including our wonderful volunteers who give freely of their time in the unit. We know that people do not know what to expect when coming into “the Hospice” so we encourage a homely atmosphere. Unfortunately as we only have limited beds we are unable to offer long term care in the inpatient unit.

Shared Care

We share what we know with whoever needs to know, so that the person, as much as possible, can be where they want to be. We then work with them, such as District Nurses or Maori Health providers, to coordinate and provide what is needed. North Haven Hospice also works with the regional Hospice services based in Dargaville, Kerikeri and Kaitaia. What is often best for a patient and family is having another service having the key role.

Counselling

Counselling is available with a registered counsellor (with additional training in the area of palliative care) through North Haven Hospice. Emotional support is recognized as an important area of care at Hospice, and the counsellor works as part of the integrated team. Counselling can happen at the Hospice or at home, and is part of the free Hospice service. Counselling aims to provide emotional support for patients and their families/whanau.

Bereavement Support

The Bereavement Support Co-ordinator liaises with the chaplain and the counselor if the family needs further professional help. Co-ordinator keeps in touch with the bereaved family, initially sending condolences by way of a personalized card. A phone call is made within 10 days of the death, followed by follow-up phone calls where necessary. Coffee mornings and Memorial services are part of our after-care support system for families.
